Hi-Desert Medical Center Special Additions Family Birthing Center promotes strong mother and baby bonding with breastfeeding education as a priority.  Health and prevention of illness is our priority.  This begins at birth with early, exclusive breastfeeding promotion and support throughout the first year of life.  We have implemented the following 10-steps required for certification as a "Baby-Friendly" birthing center.
  1. We have written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all healthcare staff
  2. We train all healthcare staff in skills necessary to implement this policy
  3. We inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding
  4. We help all mothers initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth
  5. We show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation even if they should be separated from their infants
  6. We give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk
  7. We practice rooming-in, allowing mothers and infants to remain together 24/7
  8. We encourage breastfeeding on demand
  9. We give no artificial teats or pacifiers
  10. We foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mother to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic.

In the United States, the benefits of breastfeeding could translate into millions of dollars of savings to our healthcare system through decreased hospitalizations and pediatric clinic visits.  A decreased risk of diarrhea, respiratory and ear infections and allergic skin disorders are among the many benefits of breasfeeding to infants in the industrialized world.
