HDMC Foundation announces the
"It's a Wonderful New Life: Holiday Bells are Ringing for Car Seat Safety" campaign

Those familiar with the Frank Capra holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” recall the touching end when ZuZu, George Bailey’s daughter, tells the family that “every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.” Now, through the Hi-Desert Medical Center Foundation’s “It’s a Wonderful New Life” campaign, Morongo Basin angels have a chance to earn their wings by impacting the lives of babies born at the Special Additions Family Birthing Center.

Each year the Special Additions Family Birthing Center at Hi-Desert Medical Center welcomes nearly 600 babies to our Morongo Basin communities. For many parents, leaving the birthing center with a car seat—required by state law—is an expense that is out of reach. Now you can protect our precious futures by providing those car seats to our littlest angels.

According to Foundation Executive Director Eileen Berne, parents-to-be are encouraged to complete the parenting courses available through our Special Additions Prenatal Education Center. Those who complete the courses—which are also offered in Spanish—receive a free car seat, just in time for the delivery of their special addition.

Berne explains that for as little as a $20 tax deductible donation to the Hi-Desert Medical Center Foundation, area angels can earn their wings by purchasing a bell ornament for the Hi-Desert Medical Center’s holiday tree. The lighting of the “It’s a Wonderful New Life” holiday tree will take place immediately following the Foundation’s “Dickens of a Tea” family holiday party, Sunday, December 7, at 5 p.m. at the Helen Gray Education Center.

“This program demonstrates how your small gift can truly make a big difference,” Berne says.” She adds that all angel donors will ‘receive their wings’ as a special thank you to be mailed directly to them.

Campaign partners include California Highway Patrol, Hi-Desert Publishing and Z107.7 radio.

Donor levels are “Archangel,” ($100 or more); “Angel,” ($50) or “Cherub,” ($20). To make a donation, please call Eileen Berne at 366-6321 or send a donation in care of “It’s a Wonderful New Life” payable to the Hi-Desert Medical Center Foundation, P.O. Box 907, Joshua Tree, CA 92252.

The HDMC Foundation awards scholarships to local students pursuing careers in nursing as well as financial support to the Hi-Desert Memorial Health Care District to maintain and expand healthcare services offered to the community.
